She hugged my neck and told me she had been praying for us. “I don’t understand how you have been so thankful through all that you guys have been through,” she said. It wasn’t the first time I had been told that. Thousands of people were praying for Porter as we battled to find out what was making him so sick, and the easiest way to keep everyone updated was through my Facebook page.

After each doctor appointment or new development, I would post an update about our situation. People were invested in us and wanted to know how he was doing. At the end of every update, I would say something I was thankful for and would express that God was still so good—whether the news was good or bad. I wasn’t trying to show everyone what a good Christian I was or how strong my faith stood in the midst of a trial. I saw it as an opportunity to share the gospel and show that my strength came from God alone.

So many people were following our story, some of whom weren’t believers in Christ. I knew the truth that God was good no matter what we faced, and I knew I could be thankful in the situation, even if I wasn’t thankful for the situation. I wanted to share that message with everyone reading our updates. I wanted to make it clear that I knew God was on our side, even if the situation wasn’t one we asked for or liked.

Being thankful in the midst of our situation didn’t mean it wasn’t painful. It didn’t mean I wasn’t consumed with worries and fears that my worst nightmare might come true. It didn’t mean I didn’t go over all the what-ifs and allow the darkest thoughts to enter my mind. It just meant I knew that God was bigger. And I knew that even if God chose not to heal Porter, He was still a good God.

I know in the depths of my soul that God can redeem any situation. I know that only He can take the very things we think have crushed us beyond repair and bring something beautiful out of them. Our pain isn’t taken away or forgotten, but it doesn’t go to waste. He takes that pain and breathes beautiful life into it. He picks up the pieces of our shattered souls and forms them into something only He can make. Beauty and redemption come out of our broken stories.
